COLLABORATIVE HIERARCHICAL SPARSE MODELING By Pablo

چکیده
Sparse modeling is a powerful framework for data analysis and processing. Traditionally, encoding in this framework is done by solving an `1-regularized linear regression problem, usually called Lasso. In this work we first combine the sparsityinducing property of the Lasso model, at the individual feature level, with the block-sparsity property of the group Lasso model, where sparse groups of features are jointly encoded, obtaining a sparsity pattern hierarchically structured. This results in the hierarchical Lasso, which shows important practical modeling advantages. We then extend this approach to the collaborative case, where a set of simultaneously coded signals share the same sparsity pattern at the higher (group) level but not necessarily at the lower one. Signals then share the same active groups, or classes, but not necessarily the same active set. This is very well suited for applications such as source separation. An efficient optimization procedure, which guarantees convergence to the global optimum, is developed for these new models. The underlying presentation of the new framework and optimization approach is complemented with experimental examples and preliminary theoretical results.

Sherlock: Sparse Hierarchical Embeddings for Visually-Aware One-Class Collaborative Filtering
Building successful recommender systems requires uncovering the underlying dimensions that describe the properties of items as well as users’ preferences toward them. In domains like clothing recommendation, explaining users’ preferences requires modeling the visual appearance of the items in question. This makes recommendation especially challenging, due to both the complexity and subtlety of ...
متن کاملTraffic Scene Analysis using Hierarchical Sparse Topical Coding
Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can be exploited directly to generate high-level descriptions of the video contents. Such descriptions may further be employed in different traffic applications such as traffic phase detection and abnormal event detection. One of the most recent and successful unsupervised methods for complex traffic scene analysis is based on topic models. In this pa...
متن کاملClustering for Collaborative Filtering Applications
Collaborative ltering systems assist users to identify items of interest by providing predictions based on ratings of other users. The quality of the predictions depends strongly on the amount of available ratings and collaborative ltering algorithms perform poorly when only few ratings are available. In this paper we identify two important situations with sparse ratings: Bootstrapping a collab...
متن کاملCollaborative Topic Ranking: Leveraging Item Meta-Data for Sparsity Reduction
Pair-wise ranking methods have been widely used in recommender systems to deal with implicit feedback. They attempt to discriminate between a handful of observed items and the large set of unobserved items. In these approaches, however, user preferences and item characteristics cannot be estimated reliably due to overfitting given highly sparse data. To alleviate this problem, in this paper, we...
متن کاملRobust Multimodal Graph Matching: Sparse Coding Meets Graph Matching
Graph matching is a challenging problem with very important applications in a wide range of fields, from image and video analysis to biological and biomedical problems. We propose a robust graph matching algorithm inspired in sparsityrelated techniques. We cast the problem, resembling group or collaborative sparsity formulations, as a non-smooth convex optimization problem that can be efficient...
